Audi redesigned its A6 mid-size sedan into a fifth generation model for 2019. That car introduced the brand's 48-volt mild hybrid drivetrain, which uses electricity to boost performance while also promising better fuel economy.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
New for 2020 is a four-cylinder mild hybrid engine, which joins the V6 introduced in last year's redesigned car. There are also a handful of new standard features.
Available Trims
Audi offers the A6 in Progressiv and Technik trims. Cars with the 2.0L four-cylinder engine wear the 45 designation, and V6 variants are labeled 55. Quattro AWD and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission are standard with both engines.
Standard Features
New for 2020 in Progressiv trim is an internal motion sensor for the A6's anti-theft alarm.
Otherwise, the Audi A6 Progressiv package comes standard with 19-inch wheels, automatic engine start/stop with regenerative braking, navigation, a smartphone interface, leather seating, ambient lighting, garage door opener, electric steering column adjustments, three-zone automatic climate control, shift paddles, passive keyless entry, eight-way power front seats with memory, comfort headrests and driver four-way lumbar, rain-sensing wipers, heated front and rear seats, frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror, ash wood interior trim, drive modes, power-folding side mirrors, tire pressure monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights and daytime running lights, LED taillights with dynamic turn signals, cruise control, Audi's pre-sense basic and pre-sense city collision alert systems, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, and exit assist.
New to Technik trim are an augmented version of Audi's virtual cockpit digital gauge cluster, and Amazon Alexa integration.
Other standard features carried over include power door closers, lighted door sills, matrix LED headlights with dynamic daytime running lights, a premium sound system, 360-degree exterior camera views, head-up display, premium ambient lighting, loose wheel detection, four-way front passenger lumbar, headlight washers, a power trunklid, a power rear-window sunshade, ventilated front seats, four-zone climate control, adaptive windshield wipers, Audi Connect Plus, and an air ionizer and fragrance system.
Key Options
Both A6 trims offer an S-line sport package (20-inch wheels, sport suspension and cosmetic changes) and a driver assistant package of traffic sign recognition, turn and traffic congestion assist, active lane assist, predictive efficiency assist, emergency assist and active cruise assist.
Technik options include a black optics cosmetic package; dynamic all-wheel steering; 21-inch wheels; and a contour seat package of 14-way massaging front seats, passenger seat memory, and full Valcona leather interior.
Fuel Economy
As of this writing, Audi has not published its 2020 model year fuel consumption estimates. The V6 hybrid powertrain's ratings were 10.7/8.2 L/100 km (city/highway) for the 2019 model year, and we expect those will be similar, if not the same, for the 2020 model. Look for the new four-cylinder hybrid engine to achieve ratings of around 10.0/7.5 L/100 km (city/highway).
Competition
Audi faces formidable foes in the mid-size luxury sedan class. The biggest names are the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Others include the Volvo S90, Genesis G80, Lexus GS, Lincoln MKZ, Infiniti Q70, and Cadillac CT6.
