History/Overview
This is the third generation of the BMW X6 crossover-coupe. The model was introduced to offer a more visually dynamic alternative to the upright X5 for those who valued style over cargo space. It continues in that role, largely aping the X5 with a different exterior look and feel.
What's New
The 2021 X6 adds Android Auto availability while dropping night vision and rear entertainment options. The six-cylinder car adds a 48V mild hybrid system.
Available Trims
BMW offers the X6 in xDrive40i and M50i trims. 40i means a 3.0L turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, 50i a 4.4L turbo V8. Both are standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD.
Standard Features
In xDrive40i trim, the X6 comes with 21-inch wheels and tires, remote engine start, an M Sport exhaust system, runflat tires, integral active steering, an alarm system, adaptive LED headlights, LED fog lights, and an M aerodynamics package.
Inside, there's a panoramic sunroof, heated sport front seats with electric adjustments and memory, leatherette dash trim, aluminum interior trim, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, ambient interior lighting, Apple CarPlay, auto-dimming side and rearview mirrors, satellite radio, BMW Connected Drive services, and gesture control.
Standard safety items include rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning with city-speed braking, blind spot warning, rear collision prevention, tire pressure monitoring, active protection, driving assistant, automatic high beams, and night vision with pedestrian detection.
M50i trim gets 22-inch wheels and tires, M Sport brakes and M Sport differential, aluminum interior trim, and a black headliner. It also adds ventilated front seats as standard.
Key Options
A Premium Essential pack brings niceties like passive keyless entry, soft-close doors, heated rear seats, four-zone climate control, side sun shades, and a head-up display.
Premium Enhanced group adds, among many other things, laserlight headlights, and wireless smartphone charging.
Premium Excellence package supplies massaging front seats, surround view cameras, ambient air, ventilated front seats, and glass appliques on some secondary controls. This group also includes a full suite of active safety and driver assists, like front cross traffic alert, steering and lane control, active cruise control, lane keeping assist, and a traffic jam assistant.
Those driver aids can also be added independently in the advanced driving assistance group.
Fuel Economy
BMW's fuel consumption estimates for the X6 are 11.7/9.1 L/100 km (city/highway) with the xDrive40i's six-cylinder, and 14.5/10.7 for the M50i's V8.
Competition
The BMW X6's direct competitors are the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, the Porsche Cayenne Coupe, and Audi's Q8.
