Model Overview
The Mazda5 is a compact van that builds on the Mazda3 with a larger interior and three rows of seating. Designed to accommodate small families, the Mazda5 brings to the segment the same fun-to-drive characteristics its other models are known for. While it's not a fast vehicle, the Mazda5 handles well and is the only van to offer a manual transmission. Interior design and materials give the impression of a more expensive vehicle.

On certain vehicles, the anti-corrosion treatment of the outer tube of the rear lift gate stay may be insufficient. Over time, the outer tube of the rear lift gate stay may corrode and break off, which could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace both rear door stays.

On certain vehicles, water may not have been be removed completely from the harness connector of the fuel pump due to variations in the fuel tank leak check process performed before vehicle assembly. As a result the connector pin may corrode, potentially causing the pin to break and the fuel pump to become inoperative. This could cause the engine to stall and fail to restart, which could increase the risk of crash. Correction: Dealers will inspect the fuel pump connector and if necessary the fuel pump will be replaced and the harness repaired.

On certain vehicles with Electro-Hydraulic Power Assist Steering (EHPAS), rust had formed inside the high-pressure pipe on the power steering system during manufacturing due to improper processing. Rust particles may detach from the pipe walls and enter the motorized power steering pump, causing damage to the pump bearings. As a result, gear lubrication may be reduced, leading to an increased load on the motor. Should this happen, there is the potential for the power steering system to enter the fail safe mode in order to prevent overheating, resulting in the power steering warning lamp to light and the motorized pump to stop which could lead to a loss of power assist and the required steering effort will increase. Correction: Dealers will flush the power steering system and repair as necessary.

On certain vehicles, water can accumulate within the manual door latch mechanism and freeze in low ambient temperatures. The ice build-up can interfere with proper door latch operation. If certain vehicles are operated at very high RPM levels, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) logic, which is unique to vehicles produced for the North American market, combined with insufficient insulation around the main silencer, can permit an excessive heat build-up in the exhaust system which in the worst case, can cause a vehicle fire. Correction: Dealers will replace the rear silencer, install a heat insulator kit, and update the PCM.
