For 2009, the Volkswagen Eos adds standard hill start assist to all models, along with standard or available Park Distance Control and active bi-xenon headlamps. A new available Technology Package adds touch-screen satellite navigation, media device interface, Dynaudio premium stereo, and integrated Sirius satellite radio.
Based on the Rabbit platform, the Eos uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG). Its five-piece roof includes a heated rear window, and a panoramic glass sunroof that can be tilted or slid open when the roof is up. The panels separate and store themselves in the trunk in about 25 seconds.
The Trendline trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, fog lights, power panoramic sunroof, variable intermittent wipers, heated washer nozzles, cruise control, floor mats, power locks with keyless entry, CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input, heated "leatherette" seats, locking rear pass-through, garage door opener, leather-wrapped tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and power windows with auto up/down.
The Comfortline adds dual-zone automatic climate control, sport-tuned suspension, automatic headlamps, Park Distance Control, rain-sensing wipers, digital compass, multifunction trip computer, footwell lighting, auto-dimming rearview mirror, six-CD/MP3 stereo, Sirius satellite radio, twelve-way power driver's seat with power rear easy-entry, heated leather seats, and leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel.
Safety features on both trim lines include a combined side-curtain and side-thorax supplemental airbag, and automatic rollover protection behind the rear seats.
Handsome from any angle, with the top up or down, the Eos features sharp steering, a comfortable ride, and a tight body with virtually no cowl shake even with the roof stored. Both transmissions are fun to drive, including the superb Direct Shift Gearbox, with its almost imperceptible gear changes.
