For 2007, the Volkswagen Touareg receives more power. The 3.2-litre V6 of 2006 has been replaced with a 3.6-litre V6, that makes 280 hp to the previous 240 hp. The 4.2-litre V8 gains FSI direct fuel injection, with one intake valve swapped for an injector, for an increase to 340 hp to 320 hp.
Other changes include standard Servotronic power steering on V6 models; V8 models with Luxury Package gain a pushbutton engine start; and there is a new White exterior colour.
Named for a nomadic Sahara desert tribe, the Touareg SUV is available with the 3.6-litre V6 or 4.2-litre V8, both mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic manual mode. All use 4Motion permanent all-wheel drive, with low-range gear and adaptive torque distribution.
The V6 includes dual steel exhaust pipes, trailer hitch preparation, privacy glass, automatic halogen headlamps, fog lamps, heated mirrors with reverse tilt, puddle lamps and integrated turn signals, power sunroof, black roof rack, 17-inch alloy wheels, rain sensor, heated washer nozzles, intermittent rear wiper, automatic dual-zone climate control, cruise, automatic locking, aluminum and walnut interior trim, CD player with ten speakers, eight-way manually adjusted heated front seats, 60/40 folding rear seat, Homelink garage door opener, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, “leatherette” upholstery and power windows.
The V8 adds chrome-tipped exhaust pipes, chrome door sills, automatic bi-Xenon headlamps with washers, power flush-folding mirrors with auto dimming and memory, 18-inch alloy wheels, sliding illuminated centre armrest, twelve-way power adjustable front seats with memory and lumbar support, heated rear seats, ski sack, heated steering wheel, manually-operated rear side sunshades and leather interior.
The Touareg is very well built and roomy for its five passengers, and is surprisingly capable when asked to go off the asphalt. The new V6 is a welcome addition, as the previous engine could be easily stretched to its limits very easily; even so, if it’s economically feasible, the V8 is an even better choice. Luxury features abound in this vehicle, although the controls tend to be a bit too busy, what with everything the Touareg offers.
