3. Public area with known high video surveillance to perform initial meeting

Some additional common sense advice:

• Use the partner system - always ensure that others are aware of your meeting and can check in with you mid-test..
• If you are letting another individual test drive, it is reasonable to see and ensure they have a valid driver’s license otherwise you risk your car insurance.

→ It makes sense to keep a record of this information somewhere safe, until it is no longer needed.

• Only do things you are comfortable with regardless of the reasons that may be provided by the potential buyer.

• If you are testing an unknown vehicle, it is reasonable to see if the insurance is valid or you risk test-driving a vehicle with no coverage for yourself – know what you are getting into.

→ Ensure the insurance information matches an ID that is provided by the seller to prove they own the vehicle.

• Only do what you are comfortable with regardless of the reasons that may be provided by the potential seller.

A vehicle history report is an excellent way to determine the vehicle’s history of accidents, registration, and lien information.

Ensure that the story the seller provides of the vehicle is consistent with the history report. You will also be able to match the registration information and VIN to verify the owner and determine if any liens have been placed on that vehicle. Some vehicles also may have service history included which you can also verify.

Some basic information that you will want to exchange as part of the purchase and some additional things to consider:

1. Does the vehicle have service records to pass from the seller to buyer?
2. Has the vehicle performed all safety and emissions testing paperwork?
3. Has the vehicle’s manufacturer recalled items on the vehicle been addressed??
4. If the vehicle has been modified, is it street legal?
