The S4 is Audi's answer to BMW's 340i and Mercedes' C 450 AMG. It's the sportiest compact Audi sedan that we get in Canada, but it's not the high-performance machine that BMW's M3 is. The new for 2010 S4 is reaching the end of its run, and an all-new S4 will be appearing in late 2016 as a 2018 model.
That doesn't mean that the current S4 has nothing left to offer though. We called the 2015 S4 "powerful, capable, flexible and inviting," and the car is unchanged for 2016. The 3.0L supercharged V6 produces 333 hp and quattro all-wheel drive ensures that power is turned into acceleration at a very rapid rate.
It can be optioned with adaptive suspension to make for a ride that is firm and sporty when you want or smooth and comfortable at the touch of a button. There is an available Audi Sport differential that will send the power where you need it for optimum traction and handling. A six-speed manual is the standard transmission, but the available seven-speed dual clutch box is one of the fastest-shifting transmissions in the class.
The S4’s interior is as luxurious as you would expect in a car of this class, and the cabin has Audi’s clean design. The infotainment system isn’t Audi’s most recent, so it lacks a the touchpad controller, but it is still smooth and easy to use.
The S4 comes in two trims. The base is the S4 Progressiv, and it comes with 19-inch wheels, a sunroof, heated mirrors, automatic headlights and wipers, xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, and Nappa leather sport seats with heat and power adjustment for the front seats. There is push button start, and Audi drive select to adjust suspension settings, throttle response, and the automatic’s shift points. It has a 10-speaker stereo with satellite radio. Step up to S4 Technik and get a HomeLink garage door opener, blind spot warning, adaptive headlights, heated rear seats, a rear-view camera and a Bang & Olufsen 14-speaker stereo.
Transport Canada estimates fuel economy for the S4 at 13.8 L/100 km city and 9.0 highway for the manual and 13.0/8.5 for the dual-clutch box.
