History/Overview
Ford introduced the Expedition full-size SUV in the late 1990s, basing it on the underpinnings of the F-150 pickup truck. The current fourth-generation model arrived in 2018.
What's New / Key Changes from Last Year
This year, Ford expands the Expedition's offerings with a new King Ranch trim. A variety of active safety and driver assist features are now standard too, which we've detailed below.
Available Trims
Ford sells the 2020 Expedition in XLT, Limited, King Ranch and Platinum trims. The three latter packages can be optioned in Max configuration, in a longer body with a stretched wheelbase. All Expedition models are powered by a 3.5L turbocharged V6, a 10-speed automatic transmission, and 4WD.
Standard Features
Inside, Expedition XLT comes with three-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, a garage door opener, a front wiper de-icer, flip-up rear glass, push-button engine start, Sync 3 infotainment, a nine-speaker stereo, cloth upholstery, and an eight-way power driver's seat.
Exterior items include fog lights, 18-inch wheels, automatic high beams, capless fuel filling, heated side mirrors with integral blind spot mirrors, blind spot monitoring, and keyless entry.
Standard safety features include a lane keeping system, backup sensors, and tire pressure monitoring.
Limited trim adds power-adjustable pedals, front park assist, woodgrain interior trim, a heated steering wheel, raining sensing wipers, a hands-free power tailgate, 20-inch wheels, passive keyless entry, ambient interior lighting, navigation, wireless smartphone charging, a 12-speaker stereo, perforated leather upholstery, 10-way power front seats with lumbar, ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats, LED taillights, power-folding side mirrors, and a panoramic sunroof.
The King Ranch package brings electronic continuously controlled suspension damping, 22-inch wheels, LED headlights and taillights, power side running boards, and 360-degree exterior camera views.
Finally, Platinum trim gains massaging front seats.
Key Options
Options include a rear-seat entertainment system and heavy-duty trailer tow and off-road packages.
XLT can option with a package of a hands-free tailgate, passive keyless entry, heated and ventilated front-row seats, and a heated steering wheel.
Limited offers a group with 22-inch wheels, LED headlights and fog lights, adaptive cruise control, and 360-degree camera views.
A convenience package is where you'll find Ford's inflatable second-row seatbelts, and a cargo package groups an interior cargo management system with roof rail crossbars.
Fuel Economy
Ford's fuel consumption estimates are 14.1/10.6 L/100 km (city/highway) for the standard Expedition, and 14.7/11.2 for the larger Expedition Max.
Competition
With the Expedition, Ford competes for buyers with General Motors' Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, the Toyota Sequoia, Nissan's Armada. The larger Expedition Max goes up against the Chevrolet Suburban and GMC's Yukon XL.
