As the Compass adds another year under its belt, Jeep’s compact crossover is slowly evolving into the vehicle it should have been when it was launched back in 2007.
For 2014, the Compass receives a new optional transmission. The six-speed automatic replaces the maligned CVT for most models with the exception of the Off-Road Group II package which requires it to mimic a low-range mode.
Buyers looking for value will also appreciate Jeep’s decision to throw in side-mounted seat airbags and tire-pressure monitoring as standard equipment on all models. Those shopping for the base level Sport have an all-round complete vehicle, though air conditioning is still an optional extra. A much-needed reverse camera (optional on all models) also arrives for 2014, as does a noise-abating acoustic windshield, and more soft-touch plastic materials for the interior. At the ritzy end of the spectrum, the Limited gets projector beam headlamps, perforated leather upholstery in a new swanky saddle finish.
The Compass is available in Sport, North, and Limited trim levels; Sport and North can be had in 4x2 and 4x4, while Limited comes standard with 4x4.
Compass 4x2 models come standard with a 158-hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with either a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic; buyers can upgrade to the more powerful 172-hp 2.4-litre if desired. The 2.4-litre comes standard on all 4x4 models. Those desiring true off-road ability can opt for the Freedom Drive II Off-Road Package which includes the 2.4-litre engine plus CVT with low-range capability, skid plates, tow hooks, full-size spare, knobby all-terrain tires, and a manual seat height adjuster.
Features on the Sport include 16-inch alloy wheels, manual mirrors, fog lamps, variable intermittent wipers, intermittent rear washer/wiper, assist handles, floor console with illuminated cupholders, floor mats, map lights, removable flashlight, cloth seats, cruise control, 60/40 split-folding second-row seat, CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input, tilt steering column, side roof rails, removable cargo load floor, and tire pressure warning lamp. Air conditioning can be added as an option.
The North Edition adds chrome grille texture, bright interior accents, sport mesh cloth seats, body colour power heated mirrors, air conditioning, privacy glass, power windows, power locks with remote keyless entry, illuminated entry, 60/40 split folding rear seat with recline, six-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, front passenger fold-flat seat, 115-volt power outlet, body colour door handles.
The Limited adds standard 2.4-litre engine, leather upholstery, heated front seats, projector beam headlamps, chrome fog lamp bezels, 18-inch aluminum wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheels with audio controls, four-wheel disc brakes, six-way power driver’s seat with four-way lumbar support, trip computer, satellite radio, automatic climate control, chrome exhaust tip, chrome exterior accents, and a garage door opener.
