Following a full redesign for 2014, Mercedes-Benz adds and four-wheel drive option to its Sprinter van for 2015, making it the only vehicle in its class to offer four driven wheels. As a push-button, driver-selectable system, this is a true 4x4, as opposed to an automatic all-wheel drive setup; once engaged, splits torque 35:65 between the front and rear axles. The 4WD option raises ride height by 100 mm at the rear, and 75 mm up front, lending the van a look that we must admit does say 4x4 more than AWD. The only catch is that only V6-powered models can be had with the new driveline.
Mechanically, the Sprinter is otherwise carried over from 2014. A 2.1L four-cylinder engine makes 161 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, and the optional V6 is good for 188 hp and 325 lb-ft. Transmission choices are between a seven-speed with the four-cylinder, and a five-speed when the V6 is selected.
The range begins with the 2500 model, and a heavier-duty 3500 is available, too.
Standard features include air conditioning, adjustable passenger seat, driver and passenger seat armrests, black fabric seats, electric heater booster, five-speaker stereo, tire pressure monitoring, crosswind assist, hill start assist, hydraulic jack, keyless entry, outside temperature display, storage shelf above windshield, passenger-side sliding door, tilt-and-telescopic steering column, and a trailer prep package.
