In preparation for its 2010 makeover, when it will again be named the Golf, the 2009 Rabbit receives only minor changes. A new Sport Package adds 17-inch "ClassiX" wheels, bi-Xenon headlamps, fog lamps, leather-wrapped wheel and shifter knob, and sport suspension.
The performance variation, the GTI, is covered in a separate entry.
The Rabbit is available in two- or four-door configuration, which Volkswagen calls three- and five-door, counting the hatch, and uses a 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine with five-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic with manual shift mode.
Features on the Trendline models include 15-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, variable intermittent wipers, intermittent rear wiper, anti-theft alarm, cruise control, power locks with keyless entry, illuminated vanity mirrors, CD/MP3 stereo with auxiliary input, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, tilt and telescopic wheel, and auto up/down windows.
The Comfortline adds 16-inch alloy wheels, centre armrest storage compartment, front and rear floor mats, and six-CD/MP3 stereo.
Fun to drive, with sharp handling, the Rabbit offers supportive seats, a relatively roomy seat given its size, and good performance. Interior fit and finish is excellent, and overall, it's a very nice vehicle for under $22,000.
