Issue: This recall is for certain vehicles that had an airbag inflator replaced as a part of an earlier recall campaign. This recall provides a final repair. Long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect the passenger-front airbag module. The passenger-front airbag module will be replaced as necessary. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag module. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected.

On certain vehicles, the gap between the brake line and the cardan joint of the steering shaft is too small. The brake line may come into contact with the joint and eventually suffer damage and corrosion. Ultimately, a loss of brake fluid accompanied by a reduction in front brake performance may occur. Correction: Dealer will evaluate the distance between the brake line and the cardan joint of the steering shaft. If this distance is not sufficient, it will be increased.

On certain vehicles, the cramping connection of the front safety belt buckle to the steel rope of the tensioner could detach in severe frontal crashes and could cause serious injuries to the driver and/or front passenger. Correction: Dealer will inspect both front safety belt tensioner and buckle assemblies, and replace any affected parts.

On certain vehicles, the grommet holding the brake line to the front struts may slip out of its bracket. Consequently, the brake hose attached to the brake line may come in contact with the tire and be subject to wear and abrasion. This could cause some brake fluid leakage which would eventually illuminate the brake warning indicator light. If a loss of front brake performance occurs, the rear brake circuit will still be functional, and will be able to slow and stop the vehicle. Correction: Dealer will install an additional retaining clip in order to further secure the line and grommet to the strut.

On certain passenger vehicles the brake pedal arm pivot shaft could loosen from its support bracket. Eventually, the brake pedal arm could detach from the bracket, rendering the braking system ineffective, increasing the risk of a crash. Correction: Dealers will check the brake pedal arm pivot shaft for proper seating in its support bracket. In addition, a pin will be installed to secure the shaft to the bracket.

Certain passenger vehicles. The engine auxiliary/cooling fan operation, including variable speed, is electronically controlled. Failure of the fan motor can cause the electrical circuitry of the fan control unit to overload and fail, causing the fan to stop operating. If this were to occur, engine overheating and subsequent engine damage could result. In addition, it is possible for the failure of the electrical circuitry to cause a fire in the fan control unit located in the front of the engine compartment. Correction: Dealers will replace the fan.

On certain vehicles, the lower end of the upper steering spindle may not have been inserted completely into the aluminum u-joint assembly (coupling). In such a case, the fastening bolt used to secure the connection may not completely engage the spindle within the coupling. This would make it possible for the spindle to disconnect from the coupling, resulting in loss of steering capability and a possible crash. Correction: Spindle will be inspected for proper insertion into the coupling. If necessary, the spindle will be fully inserted and the fastening bolt replaced.

On certain vehicles, the safety belt lower outboard anchorage bolt on the driver's and front passenger's seats may not have been secured properly. In the event of a crash, the safety belt system might not be able to provide its maximum restraint function. Correction: Dealers will inspect the bolts and correct the torque if necessary.

On certain vehicles, the nut that secures the axial joint of the left steering tie rod to the steering gear box may not have been tightened securely. This could lead to loosening of the nut and, initially to steering wheel play and/or misalignment, as well as noise from the steering linkage. If vehicle operation continues, the tie rod could disconnect from the steering gear box. If this were to occur, loss of steering control could result. Correction: Dealers will inspect and re-torque the nut securing the axial joint of the left steering tie rod. If the torque of the nut is found to be loose, the right nut will also be checked and corrected if necessary, and a front wheel alignment will be performed.

On certain vehicles, the plastic collar which fits over the lower steering rack input shaft may not have been pushed down fully onto the rack at the assembly plant. As a result, there can be substantially more clearance between the steering rack and the collar than the design clearance. This could eventually result in the input shaft separating from the rack with subsequent loss of steering capability. Correction: Steering rack input shaft collar will be inspected for proper positioning and repositioned if necessary.
